PERGOLA (Lat. pergula, a projecting roof, shed, from pergere, to reach forward, project), a term adopted from the Italian for an arbour of trellis-work over which are trained creeping plants, vines, etc., and especially for a trellis-work covering a path, walk or balcony in a garden.
